According to the American Cancer Society, Black women in the U.S. are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, even though Black women have lower breast cancer incidence rates. Why is that sobering statistic true?
“The higher breast cancer mortality rate among Black women compared to white women in the U.S. is a result of multiple, interrelated systemic factors,” says Casandra Autry, MD, an obstetrician/gynecologist at CentraState Medical Center. These can include limited access to quality healthcare due to geographic and economic barriers, medical biases, and often late-stage diagnoses.
