When it comes to fighting diabetes, knowledge is the best medicine. That’s because more than 84 percent of people at risk of developing diabetes, a condition known as prediabetes, don’t even know it. With knowledge comes the power to prevent the illness that can lead to serious health consequences if left unattended.
“Many people have no symptoms, and are unaware that there’s anything they can do to change the situation,” says Alison Cleary, RN, MSN, Population Health Manager with responsibility for CentraState’s Diabetes Center.
The Diabetes Prevention Program through CentraState helps with just that. By taking small steps, like eating right and exercising, participants have been able to lose between six and nine percent of their total body weight and reduce their risk of getting diabetes by more than half.
“You need to be committed to making a change in order to be successful,” says Cleary. “But if you catch prediabetes early and do the work, you can turn your health around.” (Related: How Exercise Reduces Gestational Diabetes Risk)
