Unexpected Things You’ll Experience When You Stop Taking Birth Control Pills

Birth Control

When you’ve been on contraception like the birth control pill for a long time—maybe your whole adult life—it’s easy to forget what it’s like to not be on it. If you’re coming off it to try to conceive, the big question is: Can you get pregnant right away?

7 Things You Should Expect When You Come Off Birth Control

Many of us have heard a few theories about what can happen when you come off birth control, but it’s essential to have concrete information about the side effects and what to expect.

Like many women, I heard two conflicting things when I was ready to come off hormonal birth control to try to conceive: 1. I could get pregnant right away; 2. It could take a few months for my body to “sort itself out.” I was left feeling not at all sure what to expect.

I got married at age 35 and knew I wanted to start trying for a baby soon after, but I also knew I didn’t want to be pregnant at my wedding. Would not stopping birth control pills before the big day delay my dream longer than I wished? I had spent nearly two decades trying to prevent pregnancy. I hadn’t thought about what would happen when I wanted it.

The truth is, you can get pregnant right away after stopping birth control, or it can take your time to get pregnant—both are normal (remember, it can take couples up to a year of trying to conceive on their own before the medical field will consider them to have  “infertility”—though there’s still a lot you can do in that one year).

But—here’s the important part—it won’t be the pill causing any delay to your dream of conceiving. Studies have shown that long-term (or any) use of oral contraception won’t hurt your fertility.

If you’re ready to come off of hormonal birth control, but have all the questions about it, here are seven things you can expect.

  • You really could get pregnant right away
  • Your period might not return right away
  • PMS symptoms could resurface
  • Periods could be heavier
  • You could get menstrual migraines
  • Your sex drive could change
  • You may experience acne flare-ups
